Two Ways to Stop People-Pleasing (From an Ottawa Therapist’s Perspective)
If you constantly say yes when you mean no, or feel responsible for everyone else’s mood, you may be caught in a people-pleasing pattern. At our psychotherapy practice in Ottawa, we work with many clients on this exact struggle. Here are two ideas that can help.
- Notice the automatic “yes.” People-pleasing often happens before you’ve had a chance to think. The next time someone asks something of you, pause before answering. Even a few seconds of hesitation interrupts the reflex and gives you room to check in with what you actually want.
- Separate discomfort from danger. Disappointing someone feels uncomfortable, but it isn’t the same as being unsafe. Learning to tolerate that discomfort — instead of avoiding it by over-accommodating — is one of the most effective ways to build lasting confidence and healthier relationships.
Individual therapy in Ottawa can help you understand where these patterns started and build practical tools to set boundaries without guilt. If you’re ready to explore anxiety therapy, boundary-setting support, or counselling for people-pleasing in Ottawa, we’re here to help.
