About Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

A little history...

The use of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy for therapeutic reasons is nothing new. Since early times, humans have been fascinated by the power of the mind. Throughout history, there have been people who delved into the secrets of human consciousness and developed its potential. There are documented cases in history, as early as 3000 B.C. where ancient civilizations like the Egyptian, Greek, Chinese and Romans used and documented techniques that today would be considered Hypnosis.

Hypnotherapy is a recognized Therapeutic Tool

The American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association approved Hypnotherapy for use by professionally responsible individuals as early as 1961. The British Medical Association also adopted hypnosis as a viable therapeutic tool in 1955. Hypnosis is widely used today not just in medicine, but also by top sports performers, business experts, and those in the media to boost their performance and mental focus.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation and focused attention on a subject matter. During the hypnotic state, your brain waves go from a Beta level (alert) to an Alpha level (slower waves). It has been proven that the Alpha level is highly beneficial for learning and creating new patterns. During hypnosis the mind is very receptive. It is in this state that the mind is able to replace old ideas efficiently and effectively. The results of a study conducted in Harvard University in 2001, document and indicate that the brain activity of people under hypnosis actually changes.

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is the combination of hypnosis and other carefully planned counselling and therapeutic modalities. This powerful process is two-way between you and the therapist. Great changes can be achieved by accessing your subconscious mind and changing views that no longer serve you. At Focus on Change Hypnotherapy, we pride ourselves in offering our clients a multitude of services and skills. Because we practice from a Client Centered Approach, our methods and services are flexible enough to assist clients with a wide scope of challenges.

A qualified Hypnotherapist understands how the mind's logic works and uses standard as well as personalized techniques for utilizing the mind's learning process.

How many Sessions will I need?

The number of sessions needed varies greatly on each person and her or his individual needs. For fear and phobias the average number of sessions is 2 or 3. For anxiety and depression, the number of sessions is anywhere between 4 and 10. Our stop smoking program is made up of 3 sessions. Our weight loss program is usually 6 sessions.

 Is Hypnosis Safe?

Absolutely. Hypnosis is a safe state. In fact, we all experience the hypnotic state throughout the day. Have you ever read a book or watched a show becoming so involved, that time flew by and you did not notice? Well… that is because you were in a hypnotic state. The sense of time becomes distorted while in the hypnotic state but you awareness is always sharp. You are always in absolute control.

Is Hypnotherapy Covered by Extended Health Care Benefits?

The answer to that question depends on your insurance provider and the contract you have with them. A large number of my clients have coverage for hypnotherapy services. I provide receipts with my registration number following all the A.N.N. guidelines. For more information please contact me. I'm always glad to answer any of your questions.
